lagan lagi hai sajan milan ki.
Lata - S Mohinder - Tanvir Naqvi - Naataa (1955)

That the film Naataa has never had a lyrics post before is surprising, especially its absence in the LATAnjali series. For her devoted admirers, there are rich pickings here, composed by S Mohinder. Two more songs, 'is bewafa jahan kaa dastur hai purana' and 'sun sakhi ri tera jal chuka aashiyaan', are exquisite. Lata has three more solos in the film, apart from the three mentioned in this post, and two duets with Sudha Malhotra.

The song most often cited for Raag Jaunpuri is Talat's 'meri yaad mein tum naa aansoo bahaanaa'. But the honour should belong to two other singers far, FAR better suited than Talat to sing raagdari based songs. That is really an understatement as Lata and Kishori are the two greatest singers of the last century. Kishori has a non-filmi bhajan in her repertoire : 'jo ham bhale bure
so tere'. Though it doesn't rise to the heights of her khayal presentation in Jaunpuri, it is a nice song. Lata's 'lagan lagii hai' solo, the subject of this post, is a brilliant song in Jaunpuri.

Since the character '~' creates problems when certain perl scripts are run over iTrans'ed lines, I am using the '.a' construct to denote a streched word. One 'ho' has been stretched to facilitate a short taan at the end of one line. A few other words have also been markedly stretched. After the dot-com bubble, let us have some dot-a hysteria on the forum.

I am waiting to hear from Hindi experts about 'jaa_e vs jaa_e.N', 'thii vs thii.n' type of corrections.

The film Naataa was produced by Madhubala Ltd. Madhubala had acted herself in the film. The song was penned by Tanvir Naqvi, who was married to Madhubala's elder sister. The words 'badhati jaae lay dhadkan ki' sound a bit unusual for a Hindi Film song. Naqvi's other songs which come to mind immediately are 'bechain karne wale' (his only song in Yasmin), 'badal jaae duniya' (sung
beatifully by Talat in Captain Kishore) and 'aa ki ab aataa nahi dil ko karaar' (Lata-Roshan magic in Mehbooba). S Mohinder is another lesser known composer who has given us many beautiful songs. The sweetness and fluency in Lata's singing beggar description.
