SDB's SAZAA (1951) is a treasure-chest of gems. At a first hearing, "tum na jaane" tends to dwarf all else, but after giving the others a chance, there is practically no track that you wouldn't want to revisit. Sandhya Mukhopadhyay is featured in the wonderful lilting solo "ye baat koii samajhaaye re" and in the duet "gupachup gupachup pyaar kare.n". At a party some five years back, one of our friends at Northwestern University threw the latter song as a googly amidst a set of other (well-known) Hindi songs, asking us to guess the female singer.Quite shamefully, not one of the assembled Bengali grad students (including myself) was able to guess that it was Sandhya Mukhopadhyay. Coming back to the soundtrack, the remaining songs all feature Lata; a duet with Talat : "aa jaa \-2 teraa intezaar hai", a totally disarming duet with one Pramodini :"o ruupanagar ke saudaagar" and an equally cute solo "dhak dhak dhak jiyaa kare dhak". "ho gayii re" is the only mediocre song. My favorite from the soundtrack these days is the solo "ham pyaar kii baazii haare". The antaraas convey searing grief in the direct and simple style of SDB. For some reason I can't quite pinpoint, I find the melody and arrangement of this song
to be very typically SDB.
