Tribute to RDB - mere/more nainaa saawan bhaado MD - V Balsara. Film -Vidyapati, 1964. This post also doubles as my tribute to the 1960s. A similar tribute to Laxmikant Pyarelal is also being considered. V Balsara steps in to allow me to pay this tribute. It is not my intention to suggest that the two songs which begin with these words have similar tunes. The tune by R D Burman may have used Raag Shivranjani phrases in a few places but Balsara's tune has a direct reference to the same raag. I may post link to a small excerpt of the Balsara song. Two doubts about the lyrics : Is the word 'sataa_e' or 'sataawe' or 'sataaye'? The Magadhi association of this film (Vidyapati) could be playing tricks with me but I can hear it as sataawe. It is more likely 'sataa_e'. moraa dard na jaane ko_ii or koy? I am told the standard Meera phrase uses 'koy' . I hear it more as ko_ii than koy. V Balsara, as already indicated, has set to tune the words later used in a dull R D Burman song which is not without its good points. Balsara's song, sung by Lata in Raag Shivranjani, is stunning. Did V Balsara have lot of music in him which he didn't get a chance to present to the world or did he have it in him to compose only a few good tunes? If the latter, he has silently and powerfully argued the case that if a few good tunes is all that you have in you, a few good tunes is all that you should restrict yourself to. That argument makes this tribute to RDB more a reproach to RDB. Balsara, like Snehal Bhatkar and Khurshid Anwar who has been discussed on rmim quite recently, has composed some highly distinctive tunes. The tunes are quite contrived. But Balsara is a more adroit craftsman than Bhatkar. Though difficult, his tunes are beautifully fashioned. Off the top of my head, I can recall only 6 songs by Balsara (with a little help by talatmahmood.com site). Three of them are by Lata; two solos in Madmast, each a candidate for her Top Ten list, and 'more naina sawan bhaado' in Vidyapati. He composed 6 non-film songs sung by Talat, penned by the actor Sajjan and Bharat Vyas. I have heard three of them and each one is a pleasant listen. 1. chup chaap akele chup chup kar - Sajjan 2. mera pyaar mujhe lautaa do - Sajjan 3. raat andheri door kinara - Bharat Vyas 'raat andheri' has a distinctive tune, IIRC, but now I don't remember the tune particularly well. I haven't heard the song for quite some time now. The seventh decade of the last century saw a diminution in Lata's power. But the featured song is probably better off for having been sung in the 1960s instead of during her early 1950s peak.
