O P Nayyar once told Shirish Kanekar that nobody can sing melody quite like Lata. We never had any doubt that Nayyar would know that. Nayyar added : "I will give you just two examples. 'tum kyaa jaano' (for CR) and 'baras baras badalii' (for Anilda)." The sublime Lata solo for Anilda happens to be one of the two songs whose lyrics I can quote from memory, the other being 'sitaaro, chaand se keh do' from Badi Bahu. Both the songs are of Desert Island calibre. That I discovered while putting together this post that I had got one line in the song badly wrong all this while is another matter. Lata's grip on the song ('baras baras badalii') is so maddeningly sure that her performance can only be seen as something in the realm of witch-craft. Anilda's tune and Lata's singing simply beggar description. No art, not even music, has any business of being THIS good.
