When I mentioned this song in another post a few days ago, I was surprised
to find it missing from the ISB, as also to find barely a mention of it
elsewhere on RMIM. It is a song I have treasured since I found it on the
Internet a couple of years ago. The words, the music, the singing - all
combine to create a gem of a song. The only minor fault I can find with it
is the identical composition for the two antaraa-s, right down to the
pattern of repetition of the lines - a bit of variety here would have added
to the beauty of the song.

Whenever I hear Lata sing a 'filmi' ghazal this beautifully, I wonder why
her non-film ghazals sound so...well, _bland_ (to put it kindly). None of
her non-film ghazals, bar none, come anywhere close to either her good
'filmi' ghazals or the renditions of the 'regular' ghazal greats (Begum
Akhtar, Mehdi Hasan, Farida Khanum, the early Jagjit Singh). Why this should
happen is an unsolved mystery for me, for the lady clearly has what it takes
to sing a great ghazal.

Lata's singing has a slightly breathless quality here (I hear traces of the
early Asha) that adds to the charm of the rendition.
