RMIM Thread 1
RMIM Thread 2 (Remembering Madhubala Zhaveri)

The very first song in this series was the wonderful 'chhed gayo mohe' from CR's'jhanjhar'. I would like to continue with the songs from that film. Being a big fan of Lata/CR songs, this series will include a bunch of them:-)

For a while there has been a discussion of Lata/Asha duets, and the general consensus was that they both have better duets with other female singers than with each other. A case in point is today's duet. A soft, mellow tune is enhanced greatly by the synergy between the two singers. This is the only duet of Lata and Madhubala Zhaveri that I am aware of. I wonder why they never sang together again, given the result that their collaboration produced. What a loss!

Sung in the manner of a 'lori', I don't think it could be categorized as one. If anything, this would be an anti-lori, since the singers ask not to fall asleep:-) CR was a master of such songs and this is one of his best works. Madhubala Zhaveri, surprisingly, keeps up with the Great Lady at every step. She has a very sweet voice too and it blends really well with Lata's sweet voice. It would seem to be a very cloying song, with all that sweetness flowing, but the two singers make it quite memorable.

Lata starts the song and Ms. Zhaveri joins her. Most of the song is sung by both of them. The first line of each antara is sung solo (the first one by Ms. Zhaveri and the second by Lata) and the other singer then joins in from the second line on to continue. Very good indeed.

CR shows his class in the melody and orchestration - listen to the wonderful flute section in the first interlude. In step with the nature of the song the orchestration, is non-obstrusive and the singers triump over the instruments.

A must have for all Lata/CR fans.

My recording of this song is not that great, so there are couple of words that I cannot decipher. I would appreciate if those gaps are filled.
