When Shankar Jaikishan decided to compose the music for Poonam in 1952, they
had a wide choice of excellent voices Indian Cinema has ever listened too
for playback. AFAIK, they created 9 (or may be 10) songs for Poonam. And
guess what? They decided that they can make do without any damn male
playback singer for the whole sound track. Even when the leading actor was
no other than Ashok Kumar. 8 (or 9) of the 9 (or 10) songs are Lata solos
and the remaining one is also Lata but with chorus. What better can
demonstrate the authority Her Highness commanded in her prime? (And to some
extent SJ's devotion to her!)

Three of the Lata songs from this film rank in the set of my personal
favorites, the one posted below snatching the top position among the three.
The other two are, "o bhole baalamaa, o more ssajanaa" and "jhuume jhuume
dil meraa". As with most of the SJ compositions, all of these songs have
something a little too much in them. Sometimes is the bit of extra acceleration of the song after recording but always it is the loud
orchestration produced by an unnecessary gigantic array of musicians.

This one is a little quieter of the lot, by SJ standards - presumably so -
considering it is a lori. Beautifully sung by the great Lata, this one does
have an effect of putting a troubled soul to sound sleep.
