Poets usually extol day over night or greenery over parched land. But great poets can and do turn these conventions on head. People (and poets) are forever complaining against the summer. But Tagore said : 'agni-snaane shuchii hok dharaa'. The song 'ab to aa jaao balam', a Lata solo from Poonam, somehow recalls Tagore's words to my mind. It does so probably because of the red-hot, searing edge to voice which Lata has brought to it; an edge which suggests the voice has been asked to pass a test by fire and has come out of the test completely at ease with itself but extremely hot even to contemplate for us mortals. What is more, the composers are hardly likely to have devised this test for her. She was given a wonderful tune, decided to raise it to impossible heights and then proceeded to do just that. Bhimsen Joshi keeps telling that Abdul Karim Khan Sahab's voice was infused with siddhi. Bhimsen once said whenever he did not feel like going to suro.n kii duniyaa, he used Abdul Karim's music as the route with which to re-enter the world of music, purified with his swara. And if a listener addicted to film music wants to shed the contaminations s/he is subjected to by today's ghastly music, the 1950s Lata is always ready to purify his ears and indeed his soul itself. The song is also a great testimony to the genius of Shankar Jaikishan. Their smooth magic in 'kaare badaraa tuu na jaa na jaa' provides gentle catharsis to the soul today when prostitutes and pimps have taken over music in Hindi films. The intensity of 'ab to aa jaao balam' is in contrast to 'kaare badaraa'; it provides scorching exorcism. What a boon the Shankar-Jaikishan duo was to the film world in their early years of pomp and deserved glory.
